Today is Friday, May 27. It's Memorial Day Weekend. And here are five (related) things you should know today.
1. Perhaps most important: Zume's has special hours this weekend. They're open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. And they're serving breakfast only. They've also just posted their summer menu, which you can find on their Facebook page.
2. There's a good chance you'll be grilling this weekend, yes? Just remember how dangerous (and illegal) it can be to grill on your roof, fire escape or on any balcony/porch that's higher than the first floor. Charlestown's had its share of very bad fires because of this. The Fire Department web site has some info on BBQ safety tips. They're mostly self-explanatory. But here's a sampling: Propane containers must be located in areas where there is free air circulation, at least 3 feet from building openings (such as windows and doors), and at least 5 feet from air intakes of air conditioning and ventilating systems.

3. If you've got the time, stroll over to the Common this weekend, where volunteers from the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, a nonprofit that supports families of those lost in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, have placed thousands of American flags, each representing a fallen Massachusetts service member. They'll be on display through Memorial Day. You can get a preview on Back Bay Patch.
4. Or, for a fairly different Memorial Day experience, you can visit the Museum of Fine Arts and receive free admission all day. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Click here for more info.
