Charlestown Fire: Bunker Hill Street Blaze Strikes 6 Alarms [Photos]
Flames and icicles could both be seen as companies battled a six-alarm fire and frigid conditions in the 100 block of Bunker Hill Street.
Smoke billowed from a Bunker Hill Street apartment building as firefighters battled both heavy flames and dangerously cold weather in Charlestown Friday morning.
According to the Boston Fire Department, the fire started at 144 Bunker Hill St., described as a three-story building with residences on the top two stories. Monument Laundromat is on the first floor. As first noted by The Boston Globe, the laundromat played a small role in 2010's "The Town," set in Charlestown but largely shot elsewhere. An adjacent home at 28 Monument St. was also affected, and residents displaced.
Six alarms were struck within a half-our of the fire starting.

Single-digit temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills additionally complicated firefighting efforts, with icicles coating hydrants and freezing ladders in place. Chief Joe Finn told reporters firefighters have been rotated in and out to keep warm.
"Everything's frozen, the street's frozen," Finn said. "There's a lot of hazards."

So far, no injuries have been reported, but Finn said about 20 residents were displaced. They are receiving assistance from the mayor's office and the Red Cross.
It's unknown at this point how the fire began, and Boston Fire does not anticipate finding out by end-of-day.
The roof and parts of the building's upper floors have collapsed, Finn said. Firefighters anticipated being on-scene most of the day, as they continued to contain the blaze despite a densely packed neighborhood and inclement weather conditions. They were still dousing hot spots as of about 3 p.m.
Numerous videos showed plumes of grey smoke billowing into the sky and, in several shots, vivid orange flames crackling through the building:

Fire responders first arrived on scene around 6:45 a.m. Mutual aid companies also responded from outside Charlestown, including the Cambridge and Somerville fire departments.
It's the second time this year that Bunker Hill Street has seen so much smoke. This summer, under exactly opposite conditions, another six-alarm fire badly damaged homes in the 200 block of the same street during a broiling summer heat wave.
