CSAC Needs Your Help

In a partnership with Connect2Prevent, Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition is creating an online resource to help parents talk with their kids about alcohol and drugs. They're looking for volunteers in the development phase.

Today is Monday, July 11. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. Parents: this is for you. Connect2Prevent is a partnering with the very important Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition (CSAC) to develop an online program that about alcohol and drugs. And they need your help. The organization is looking for parents and teens to complete a confidential online survey about parent-teen communication, which will help shape the resource. Interested? There's $25 in it for you too. Click for more info.

2. The is back! It returned last week, in case you missed it. It runs on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. on Main Street behind Ace Hardware. The produce sold at the market is provided by one local farming family -- the Stillmans. They run a farm in New Braintree, I know them personally and I can tell you, this is precisely the kind of family and agriculture operation you want to support. You'll have another opportunity this Wednesday and every other Wednesday from now until the end of October.

3. Do you want 18-wheelers loaded with hazardous waste rolling around city streets? No? Well, neither do several politicians representing the city. The mayor, along with Sen. Kerry, Rep. Capuano, state Rep. Aaron Michlewitz and state Sen. Anthony Petruccelli, are advocating that MassDOT uphold the city's proposal that vehicles carrying hazardous waste stay off local roadways. You can read more about the proposal at NorthEndWaterfront.com.

4. Dying to get rid of your Boston accent? There's a woman in Southie who coaches natives who want to stop dropping their Rs, among other things. The Globe did a story on these classes and the woman from -- get this -- New Jersey, who teaches them. It's worth it to watch the video. The takeaway is that there's really nothing wrong with your Boston accent. Obviously. (True story: I sorta made my own go away in high school, when I fancied myself an "actor." It creeps up all the time. Especially when I order my favorite summertime icey drink: an Ahnald Pahmer. Go ahead. Try to say that without your accent.)

5. Today's forecast: a slight chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 88.
