Despite City-Wide Vote, Charlestown Backed Connelly in Mayor's Race

Residents responded to Connolly's message targeting "new" Boston residents.

In what could be a harbinger of the direction of the neighborhood's political outlook, Charlestown voters backed former City Councilor John Connolly over now Mayor-elect Martin Walsh as residents appeared to embrace Connolly's message of education directed to a "new" Boston then Walsh's more traditional missive.

Connolly received 3,213 votes from the seven precincts in Ward 2 which represents Charlestown versus Walsh's total of 2,309, or 58 percent to 41 percent.

In the at-Large City Council race, Main Street's Jack Kelly – who finished eighth in an eight person race – received the majority of his support from his neighbors as he took nearly 30 percent of Ward 2 votes.

But the neighborhood also backed new candidates such as the South End's Michelle Wu – who finished second and will be on the board – who was preferred by 14 percent of Charlestown voters, a good showing for a first-time candidate in a multi-person race.

And it was no surprise that popular incumbent District 1 City Councilor Sal LaMattina took nearly three of four votes in Charlestown in his race with Brian Gannon.
