Free Pet Adoptions on Sept. 8

Help save the lives of 1,500 cats and dogs between August 1 - October 31 as part of the Race to Rescue challenge.

Continuing the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Race to Rescue 1500 challenge, adoption fees for all animals will be waived on Thursday, September 8 from 1 - 7 p.m. at the Boston location, and 1 - 6:30 p.m. at the Dedham location.

Even if would-be adopters can’t take advantage of the September 8 fee waiver, each shelter has Free Cat Friday in which the adoption fee for certain cats is waived.

Race to the Rescue 1500 has the ambitious goal of saving the lives of 1,500 cats and dogs between August 1 - October 31. Lives saved include adoptions, animals reunited with their owners and animals placed in homes through the assistance of other shelter agencies. Race to Rescue 1500 is being held in conjunction with the ASPCA’s nationwide $100,000 Save More Lives Challenge.

A free adoption day at the beginning of August resulted in 38 animals being adopted, and through August 29, the total number has risen to 317.

“While well ahead of last year’s pace that number leaves us still behind our very ambitious 2011 goal, so we’re eager and determined to pick up the pace and save even more lives in September and October,” said Boston Shelter Manager Marianne Gasbarro.

“One of the best ways people can help us reach our goal is by adopting a cat or dog by October 31,” Gasbarro said. “In addition, you can help by spreading the word to family, friends, co-workers and neighbors – including sharing it on Facebook and Twitter. Anything you can do to get the word out is appreciated.”
