Funeral Mass Scheduled for Peter Looney Today

A funeral Mass for Peter Looney is scheduled for 11 a.m. at St. Mary-St. Catherine's on Warren Street.

Today is Monday, Aug. 15. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. The neighborhood will say its last goodbye to a hero of a Townie today. , who died last Thursday after a long battle with cancer and declining health, will be buried this morning. Final visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Carr Funeral Home. A Mass will follow at St. Mary-St. Catherine's on Warren Street. And internment will take place thereafter at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Peter was the very first person I met in Charlestown -- a serious boon for someone in my position -- and he was incredibly generous to me from the start. I feel so privileged to have known him.

2. But the good work that Peter did lives on -- as evidenced this week by a Charlestown Against Drugs "summer in the city" party. On Wednesday from 5 to 10 p.m., the neighborhood is invited to Eden Street Park for a cookout, some ball games and an outdoor movie.

3. I know the market and the economy is dismal everywhere, but I'd just like to point out that each week we publish a few recent home sales in Charlestown and each week they surprise me. Check out the .

4. We'll be hearing more about this expanded bottle bill in the coming months. The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection is pushing hard for it. we ran this weekend from the commissioner, who is making a case. What do you think?

5. Today's forecast: Rain, patchy fog before 11 a.m. High around 74. Chance of rain 90 percent.
