How the Ward Voted (and a Poll)

A look at how Charlestown voted in the at-large councilor race on Tuesday.

Less than 20 percent of Charlestown's registered voters turned out Tuesday for the municipal election.

And although Michael Flaherty lost his bid to return to the City Council, he made a strong showing in Charlestown: 20 percent of the votes cast for at-large councilor went to Flaherty across the neighborhood's precincts.

Of the 11,905 registered voters, only 2,307 cast ballots on Tuesday. Here's a summary of how the ward voted for at-large candidates.

  • John Connolly was the top vote-getter in Charlestown with 1,429 votes.
  • Michael Flaherty came in second with 1,281 votes.
  • Ayanna Pressley received 1,090 votes.
  • Felix Arroyo received 1,023 votes.
  • Stephen Murphy received 994 votes.
  • Sean Ryan received 345 votes.
  • Will Dorcena received 172 votes.
  • And there were 24 write-in candidates.

The only other candidate on Charlestown's ballot was District 1 City Councilor Sal LaMattina, who ran unopposed. He received 1,584 votes for the seat. Thirty-one votes went to write-in candidates.

Vote Charlestown, the group trying to boost turnout at the polls, congratulated the neighborhood on the small increase in the number of votes since the last municipal election. (About 600.) On their Facebook page, they also asked what it would take to get the remaining 80 percent of voters to the polls for a municipal election.
