Things Shawn Thornton Says -- About Charlestown

Plus, a group of volunteers is looking for help maintaining the Training Field.

Today is Wednesday, June 22. Here are five things you need to know.

Editor's note: The 80s and 90s trivia at scheduled at Sullivan's tonight has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled for later this summer.

1. There is a blog called Things Shawn Thornton Has Said. And it does indeed publish nothing but things that Shawn Thornton has said. And here is one of those things that some of you may really appreciate: "Charlestown wears my jersey. Young girls wear Seguin’s jerseys, we figured that much out. I’m assuming people with a screw loose wear Marchand jerseys. I don’t know why you’d wear that thing.”

2. The Training Field is one of the most prized and beautiful spots in the neighborhood. A group of volunteers have recognized that it takes a good deal of work to keep it that way. The Friends of the Training Field are hoping you, fellow neighbors, will help them with their work plan (which includes tree maintenance and plantings) as well as the fundraising that will support this. -- and how you get can get involved.

3. Saw this on today's City Council agenda: City Councilor LaMattina (who represents Charlestown) has proposed a resolution encouraging city residents to reduce meat consumption by participating in Meatless Mondays. If you click here you can read the actual resolution, which says that excessive meat consumption has been connected to cancer and heart disease. Meatless Mondays is a national initiative backed by public health organizations. The campaign's web site has some good info. As someone who is very interested with real food and health, I would politely add to this that unprocessed meat that comes from small, pasture-based farms has not been connected to any heart disease or cancer. It's the kind of meat you're eating and where it's from that matters! (Stepping off soapbox.)

4. Said to say there's a 20 percent chance of rain today, particularly after 3 p.m. High of 76.
