LaMattina to Look At City's Trash Policy

Charlestown's district councilor is concerned about trash spilling into city neighborhoods and being disturbed by rodents. He's sponsoring a hearing this Thursday on the matter.

District 1 City Councilor Sal LaMattina wants to talk trash.

The councilor who represents Charlestown is sponsoring a hearing this Thursday on trash pickup in the city -- specifically on what kinds of containers trash should be stored in. He's advocating for metal or plastic barrel, to keep debris secure and less accessible by rodents. He sent out the following email on the matter last Friday:

Dear Neighbors,

Keeping our communities clean and healthy must always be a top priority for all of us. One simple step that we can take in that direction right now is insisting that everyone put trash out in metal or durable plastic barrels. Too often trash is put out in flimsy plastic bags that sometimes sit on the curb all night, subject to the elements and hungry wildlife - including rodents.

Using metal or plastic barrels will contain and secure trash until it is picked up by sanitation workers, making it less likely to spill onto streets, blow around and lure animals. I am co-sponsoring a public hearing on this matter in the Council chamber at City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 6, starting at 2 p.m. before the Committee on City, Neighborhood Services and Veteran Affairs, which I chair. Residents and business owners are invited to attend the hearing and to offer testimony.

Sincerely,
