Lured By Low Gas Prices? Read the Fine Print

The Better Business Bureau warns gas stations offering low prices for "cash only" need to spell out the details of the deal on their signage.

Today is Friday (!), April 29. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. If you live in the Navy Yard and you have a car, you’ll want to read this: The City of Boston is doing a street cleaning in the Navy Yard from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. MGH will be offering free parking in the garage at 36 1st Avenue starting tonight (Friday night) at 7 p.m. until Saturday night at 7 p.m. Thanks to the Navy Yard resident who sent me the tip.

2. And here’s a tip another a Navy Yard resident. On Wednesday night the city's school committee unanimously approved the extension of Superintendent Carol Johnson's contract to 2015. Johnson became BPS superintendent in 2007, after serving as superintendent of Memphis, Tenn., and, earlier, Minneapolis, Minn., schools. She earns a salary of $266,750 a year. You can read more, if you like, here.

3. So um, gas prices. They’re bad. The Better Business Bureau sent out an alert yesterday to consumers who are lured (with good reason) to stations with the lowest price. Turns out in many cases those low prices are only offered to customers paying with cash. Is that legal? In Massachusetts it is, according to the BBB. However, “cash” should be spelled out in the signage and both cash and credit prices should be clearly labeled at the pump. If they’re not, go ahead and alert the BBB or Attorney General’s office -- or haggle with the station owner and snag the deal you thought you were getting. If you want to find the best gas prices in the area or do a price comparison, check out gasbuddy.com for relatively real-time data. Looks like right now the best deal is at Hess on Cambridge Street: $3.83 per regular gallon.

4. Want an invitation to the Annual Boarding Party and Collections Open House at the USS Constitution Museum? Then you should send your name and mailing address to jmcmenamin@ussconstitutionmuseum.org. This year's theme is Tools of the Trade. The Boarding Party will be held on May 26 from 6-9 p.m. at the Museum. According to a post on the Museum’s Facebook page, guests will get a look at some of the Museum's acquisitions, get to meet with local artisans and participate in the Annual Rum challenge. I don’t know what that is, but it sounds great.

5. We’re in for a beautiful day, and weekend. Today: Mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 60s. Saturday: The same. And Sunday: Partly cloudy but temps will stay in the upper 60s.
