Massachusetts Drivers Being Scammed by Fake RMV Sites

Made up vehicle fees, sites with no links and even sites with taglines at the top that indicate they are not affiliated with a government agency have sprung up on the Web of late.

WCVB’s Newscenter 5 reported June 25 that drivers attempting to renew their licenses are being scammed out of money by sites that resemble the official Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicle website.

WCVB reports that consumers should watch out for sites without links to other state agencies and warns not to rely on Google to find the site. Another warning something is off is if the site asks you to pay at the beginning as opposed to at the end.

A state official told WCVB that fees will always be the final step in a transaction on an official state page.
