Menino Hangs with Oprah, Gets Harvard Degree

The Boston mayor will be staying at Brigham and Women's Hospital for several days after having an elective surgery on Friday.

From hanging with Oprah to resting comfortably after having surgery—what a difference one day makes. 

On Thursday, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino got to joke around with media empress Oprah Winfrey, while he received an honorary doctorate degree at Harvard University's annual commencement exercises.

On Friday, Menino checked into Brigham and Women's Hospital for a common elective surgery to relieve problems caused by an enlarged prostate, which is a common problem for men Menino's age. The surgery had been planned.

"The procedure, which went very well, lasted approximately two hours and the mayor is now in recovery resting comfortably," Dr. Kevin Loughlin, professor of surgery for Harvard Medical School and Brigham, said in a press statement. "He will remain at the Brigham for at least the next few days while we monitor his recovery and progress."
