Navy Yard Plaque Dedicated to Community Leader

David Whelan passed away in December.

Boston, MA - The Mayor of Boston and the State's Attorney General joined local officials Friday to honor lifelong Charlestown resident David Whelan.

A community leader and longtime public servant, Whelan died from leukemia at age 54 this past December.

"David Whelan left a lasting mark on the Charlestown community," Mass. AG Maura Healey said on Twitter. "I will miss his great sense of humor and kind spirit."

Whelan's long history of public service includes decades with the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority, past board membership with the Charlestown YMCA, leadership roles with the the Bunker Hill Associates and membership in Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Charlestown Neighborhood Council, Friends of The Charlestown Navy Yard and St. Francis De Sales Church Parish Council, according to his obituary.

A plaque was dedicated to Whelan, mounted to an anchor at the Charlestown Navy Yard Friday morning, where it will stand in his honor.
