Oxy-Morons Writer, Star Honored by Newbury Street League

Johnny Hickey was recognized last week at the league's annual gala.

Today is Tuesday, June 7. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. Been wondering what Johnny Hickey's been up to lately? The Charlestown native behind the film Oxy-Morons was in Boston last week -- at the Mandarin Oriental, to be exact, where members of the Newbury Street League honored Hickey during their annual gala. According to the Oxy-Morons Facebook page, Hickey's next stop is the Las Vegas Film Festival.

2. A power plant in the Navy Yard -- news to me. But I learn something new every week from Helen O'Neil's column, . This week she focused on Building 108 in the Navy Yard, which is boarded up and fenced off. Why? Because during a cleanup effort years ago, an oil spill rendered the building unsafe and unusuable. According to Helen's story, the Boston Redevelopment Authority is actively seeking up to $15 million in federal funds to get the site decontaminated and, with hope, ready for development. Read more about the building and its history .

5. Forecast calls for another beautiful day today. High near 79, with a chance of showers or thunderstorms before 7 p.m. (Slight chance.)

3. Do you love real strawberries? You know, the kind that taste like actual strawberries, because they're harvested locally, in season? If you do, and you also happen to like farmers markets, this is a very good thing: The Federation of Massachusetts Farmers Markets (that's the organization that runs several of the big Boston area markets, including Copley Square) is hosting its annual Strawberry Dessert Fundraiser, right now. Participating restaurants are using strawberries from local farms to create special desserts. Every purchase will support Mass. Farmers Markets. Unfortunately there aren't any Charlestown restaurants participating, but there are several nearby. Take a look. (Scroll down to the strawberry festival link.) And PS--local strawberries are at local farmers markets this week. And they're amazing.

4. Speaking of fundraising -- The is wrapping up its annual appeal for support. If you've ever been to anything at the Stove Factory Gallery, you know how cool this local nonprofit is, and how important it is to keep them in the neighborhood. A PDF of their appeal letter is attached to this story, if you're interested in making a donation. You can also visit artistsgroupofcharlestown.com.
