Ready for a Swim? The Clougherty Pool is Open

Today is Friday, July 1. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. To clear up any confusion, is open. Some of you may have heard that all state-run pools are closed for the holiday weekend, after a woman was found dead in a DCR pool in Fall River. She’d apparently been there for days, unnoticed by swimmers and pool staff. The DCR is investigating the incident and shuttering all of its deep-water pools in the meantime. However, the closings don’t affect Charlestown’s outdoor pool on Bunker Hill Street (next to Doherty Park) or the indoor pool at the community center. Those are city run, managed by city staff and open to everyone.

2. Want to participate in a tonight in the Navy Yard? You can tonight, and there’s a parade to boot. Starting at 6:30 p.m., sailors from the USS Constitution will perform traditional boarding pike and gun drills. There will also be performances by groups such as the 1812 Marines, the Gaelic Column and the William Diamond Junior Fife and Drum Corps. The whole show wraps up at sunset – 8:25 p.m. – with cannon fire. Not a bad way to start off the holiday weekend. Want more details?

3. A group of Boston police officers took on a team of young townies last night in a game of basketball. And the kids won. Stay tuned, we’ll have some video from the event later today.

In any case, you might like to know there’s a of Charlestown on Sunday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., starting in the Navy Yard. Admission is $12.
