Here's the syllabus of the things we'll learn and do. Lot's of fun, and lots of learning!
Week 1: July 5 - 7 Tour of the Americas
We’ll explore different foods, music, animals and beautiful sites of the Spanish-speaking world. We will travel to Mexico and learn about the ancient Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and enjoy the soothing sounds of the Andean flute and conch shells. Musical letters from around the Americas will introduce us to rhythms and instruments native to South and Central America. We’ll also learn about exotic places such as Angel Falls and the amazing Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. We’ll also learn about countries and find them on the globe.

Week 2: July 12 - 14 To the Amazon and The Caribbean!
We’ll see beautiful sites from the Amazon, sing about exotic and endangered animals, and will use recycled materials to learn how to preserve nature. We'll also hear the sounds of tropical animals such as the Macaw, the Cuban Mockingbird, pink dolphins of the Amazon, the Puerto Rican Coqui frog, and others. We will learn that Lonesome George (’Solitario Jorge’) is the last known living individual of the Pinta Island tortoises of the Galapagos Islands. We will also be transported to the ocean to learn about aquatic animals and enjoy summer themes such as the beach, sunglasses, and every child's favorite ice cream truck.
Week 3: July 19 - 21 Let’s Put On a Show!
This week musicians will visit to show and play instruments - and even help us compose music. Children will explore various vibrant rhythms from Central and South America. Since much ‘Latin’ music can trace much of its roots to African drumming, we’ll expose children to many percussion instruments. There will be an instrument ‘petting zoo’, where the children will be able to handle and play percussion instruments, such as bongos, congoas, rain sticks, tambourines and maracas. We’ll also build our own instruments from recycled materials, and at the end of the week we’ll put on a show! It will be our great “Cha Cha Cha Concert!”
Week 4: July 26 - 28 Little Chefs
Children will delight themselves and their own parents with wonderful dishes from the Americas. The target vocabulary will be table and kitchen words. Table manners will be taught. Children will discover new science, math, health, social skills and cultural awareness through our hands-on cooking of Central and South American cuisine - for instance, “arroz con gandules” and the very yummy Cuban rice pudding (”arroz con leche”). Children will measure, squeeze, and mix ingredients while singing traditional songs from Latin-America and producing new dishes. We will also plant various legumes to better understand the process of nature. We will count them and emphasis their diversity through differentiating colors and shapes.
Week 5: August 2 - August 4 On the Farm
The class will have fun learning the names of farm animals as we turn our classroom into a farm! Students will work together like bees (’abejas’) as we build a barn, stables, and a home for each animal. Through song, role-play, and Total Physical Response (TPR) storytelling, students will learn about each animal, its needs, and why it has a place on the farm (provides milk, eggs, wool, etc.). We’ll examine the different animals found on different farms through the Americas and the Spanish-speaking world.
