Stamp to Feature USS Constitution

The US Postal Service will feature Old Ironsides on a commemorative stamp next year, to mark the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

The jewel of the Navy Yard has scored a starring role on a US stamp.

will be featured on a 2012 "forever" stamp commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812. For the stamp design, the Postal Service picked a painting of the USS Constitution by Michele Felice Cornè from around 1803.

"The majestic warship — which is today docked at the historic Charlestown Navy Yard in Massachusetts — became a symbol of the young nation’s naval power and fierce independence. ... The USS Constitution acquired the nickname 'Old Ironsides' during a victorious battle with a ship of the Royal Navy at the beginning of the War of 1812."

This isn't the first time the 214-year-old warship was featured on a stamp. Wikipedia says the Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in 1947 to mark Old Ironsides' 150th birthday.
