Week in Review: Charlestown Candidate Joins City Council Race, Whole Foods Update

A look at some of the top stories on Charlestown Patch last week.

  1. Charlestown Man Launches City Council Campaign— Charlestown resident Jack Kelly has officially announced his candidacy for at-large Boston city councilor and kicked off his campaign Friday night at a fundraiser at Old Sully’s.
  2. Townie Association Bringing Back ‘Mayor of Charlestown’ Race—The race to become the new “Mayor of Charlestown” is officially on, and the prize is not only bragging rights but also a trip for two to Ireland.
  3. Whole Foods May Open by Late September—The new Charlestown Whole Foods Market could open as early as September and will feature a small indoor dining area in the front, store team leader Kim Hall told members of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council.
  4. —A Tufts Street resident reported on Tuesday, May 21 that a friend who was staying with her stole money from her wallet.
  5. Menino Having Surgery on Friday—Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was scheduled to have surgery this week at Brigham and Women's Hospital to reduce his enlarged prostate.
  6. BRA Director Peter Meade To Retire in January—Boston Redevelopment Authority Director Peter Meade will be retiring in January, stepping down at the same time as Mayor Thomas Menino, the Boston Business Journal reported this week.

  8. Boston To Guide Drivers With Video Screens—The rush hour bottleneck that occurs at many of the entrances to major arteries and highways out of Boston could become a thing of the past in the near future. The city of Boston Transportation Department will install six “variable message screens” which will display real-time, GPS-based traffic data during the evening commute beginning this fall
