Week in Review: Charlestown Shooting Suspect Named, Monument Climb and Mayoral Race Updates

A look at some of the top stories on Charlestown Patch last week.

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Charlestown Patch this week:

  1. Sister of Charlestown Shooting Suspect Charged with Witness Intimidation—A man believed to be involved in the May 7 fatal shooting of Steven Jones remains at large while his sister was arraigned this week on other charges, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
  2. Charlestown Woman Taking Final Steps of 30-Day Bunker Hill Monument Climb—Elena Barbera began her month-long journey on April 23, promising to climb the monument’s 294 steps every day through May 22 to raise money to help the 14 people who lost a limb in the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15.   3. New Drug Court Program Operating in Charlestown—A new court program operating in Charlestown aims to help people struggling with substance abuse gain access to treatment and move on with their lives.
  4. Police Reports: Man Punched Over Cigarette—A man enjoying a cigarette outside his workplace on Thursday, May 16 was punched in the face by another man who said he was bothered by the cigarette.
  5. ‘Second Change’ Scholarships Available to Boston Public School Graduates—The Alray Scholars Program, named in memory of a Charlestown High School graduate, offers scholarships of up to $5,000 for public school students who left college early and want to go back for their degrees.
  6. Connolly Opens Campaign Office in Charlestown—Nearly 50 volunteers gathered Saturday, May 18 at 295 Main St. to open Boston mayoral candidate John Connolly's new campaign office in Charlestown.
  7. 17 Mayoral Candidates Submit Signatures—Seventeen possible Boston mayoral candidates submitted papers Tuesday before the 5 p.m. deadline at City Hall. That doesn't mean all 17 will be on the ballot in the Sept. 24 election, as 3,000 individual signatures must be certified by June 25.
  8. —Boston's budget hearings for Mayor Thomas Menino's last proposed budget—a $2.6 billion operating budget, are rolling along. A new updated budget will be submitted by the Menino administration in about three weeks, and the Boston City Council will vote on the last Wednesday in June on the resubmitted budget.
  9. Mayor Announces $1.8 Billion Capital Plan—The mayor last week announced a plan to invest $1.8 billion over the next five years in capital projects across the city, including $1.6 million for a new park near Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard.
