Week in Review: Charlestown Votes in State Primary; Volunteers Help Boston Shine

A look at some of the top stories on Charlestown Patch last week.

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Charlestown Patch this week: 

  1. How Charlestown Voted in Special State Primary—Charlestown voted with the rest of the state in selecting a Republican candidate to compete in the June 25 special state primary, but when it came to picking a Democrat, Charlestown was in the minority.
  2. Police: Victim Claimed Handgun Displayed in Argument—Boston Police responded to a report of a verbal dispute which turned violent on Walford Way on Monday, April 26.
  3. PHOTOS: Charlestown Residents Help Boston Shine—More than 300 volunteers turned out last week to help clean up Charlestown through 21 different projects as part of the citywide "Boston Shines" program.
  4. —More than just muscles benefitted from exercises completed at a fundraiser held April 26 in Charlestown. Coaches at Avalon CrossFit, located in the new Knights of Columbus building on Medford Street, volunteered to do one burpee, or squat thrust, for every $1 donated to The One Fund Boston, for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
  5. Bunker Hill Community College Student Named One of ’21 Who Shine’ in Commonwealth—Valter Gomes is a business major at BHCC, which has a campus in Charlestown, and was one of 29 public college and university students to be recognized for their academic achievements and civic contributions to the Commonwealth. 
  6. Mayor Menino To Hold Neighborhood Coffee Hours—Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host the 15th annual Neighborhood Coffee Hour Series in local parks citywide from May 8 to June 3. The Charlestown meetup will be held Friday, May 10 at John Harvard Mall, 29 Harvard St. from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  7. New Spaulding Rehab Hospital Welcomes Patients—The new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard welcomed its first patients over the weekend, as staff members coordinated to move more than 100 people from the hospital’s Nashua Street location to their new temporary residence across the river.
