Week in Review: Whole Foods Announces Opening, City Reviews Wynn Casino Plans
A look at some of the top stories on Charlestown Patch last week.

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Charlestown Patch this week:
- Charlestown Whole Foods Market To Open in August—It's official: The new Charlestown Whole Foods Market will open Aug. 7. Though company representatives said in June that the opening of the new store at 51 Austin St., in the Bunker Hill Mall, was slated for September, the project has been on a fast track and an earlier date was announced Monday afternoon.
- Charlestown Could Be Considered Host Community for Wynn Casino—Boston officials are taking a close look at plans filed recently for the Wynn LLC resort casino in Everett and asking whether the city should be considered a host community for the project—and if the issue should go before voters in Charlestown.
- Read Councilor LaMattina's Letter About Wynn Casino Proposal—District 1 Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina last week submitted a letter to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs regarding Wynn LLC's resort casino project in Everett.
- Charlestown Residents Encouraged to Review Wynn Casino Plans—In an effort to allow Charlestown residents a chance to look over and comment on early plans for Wynn LLC's resort casino in Everett, the city has posted a copy of the environmental notification form online and extended the comment period until Tuesday, July 23.
- Charlestown Man Wants People to Buy, Burn Rolling Stone's Tsarnaev Issue—A Charlestown resident is organizing a protest against Rolling Stone magazine’s decision to put Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover of their latest edition. At least two businesses—CVS Pharmacy and Roche Bros.—have announced they will not be selling the magazine in deference to the bombing victims.
- PHOTOS: Kids Cool Off at Renovated Doherty Playground During City Heat Wave—The Boston Parks and Recreation Department hosted a Splash Dance Party on Thursday, July 18 at Doherty Playground. Mayor Thomas Menino even dropped by to hand out Hoodsies.
- Jack Kelly Talks Campaign, Park Renovations—Boston City Council candidate Jack Kelly joined city officials and neighbors in celebrating the renovations at Doherty Playground on Thursday afternoon.
- Should the BRA Separate? City Council Candidates Weigh In—How would you change the Boston Redevelopment Authority? Candidates for Boston City Council were asked that question at the July 10 Ward 3 Democratic Committee candidates’ night, held at the Nazzaro Center in Boston’s North End.
- At-Large City Council Candidates To Speak Aug. 14 in Charlestown—BNN-TV's "Charlestown Live" will sponsor a series of three Town Hall meetings starting on Aug. 14 with all 19 candidates for the Boston City Council at-large race being invited to participate.
- Is Charlestown at Risk for Lyme Disease?—Massachusetts is a hot zone for Lyme disease, but the rate of infection is relatively low in Boston.
