Will Some Free Sox Tickets Get Your Child Reading More?

The Boston Public Library is launching its summer "Read Your Way to Fenway" contest.

Today is Tuesday, May 17. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. Want to motivate your child to read more this summer? Would some free Sox tickets sweeten the deal? The Boston Public Library is giving hundreds of young people (ages 5 to 17) the chance to see a baseball game in the annual "Read Your Way to Fenway" contest. Kids only need to read a minimum of three books and write a brief essay about their favorite to participate. The contest officially starts on June 1. To enroll your child, visit www.bpl.org/summer or stop by the Charlestown branch for an application.

2. I noticed a few folks posting on Patch recently for clarification about this year's Bunker Hill parade date: For the record: it's June 12. Also, I saw the Bridge reported this week that John "Jack" Duffy will be the chief marshal this year. (You can read more about that here.) The story also directs anyone who would like to volunteer or who has a question about the parade to contact Arthur Hurley at 617-242-2724 or aahurley@earthlink.net.

3. So there's Groupon and Eversave and BuyWithMe and Living Social and probably dozens more that I haven't heard of it yet -- all online, all offering limited-time-only coupon deals for businesses around the city. We can put one more on the list: Boston Deal Ninja. Got an email from them yesterday, saying they've launched. Their first deal: one free music lesson at Daddy's Junky Music.

4. St. Mary-St. Catherine of Siena Parish is hosting a movie screening on Wednesday for seniors. "" will be shown at the St. Mary's lower church hall from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The film is set in 1917 Fatima, Portugal and it tells the story of three children who have visions of the Virgin Mary. A light luncheon will be included. Call (617) 242-4664 if you plan to attend.

5. Today's forecast: It only gets worse. Showers today, and cloudy skies. Temperature around 48. Chance of rain is 100 percent. Good news: Next week looks amazing. Until... Memorial Day Weekend, when the rain may resume its regular schedule.
