Chelmsford Driver Strikes, Kills Pedestrian on Highway

State Police say the victim was walking in the travel lane of Interstate 495.

LOWELL, MA – A Chelmsford driver struck a 39-year-old early Saturday morning, killing the man as he reportedly walked down the highway.

According to State Police, a 61-year-old was driving his Ford pickup south down Route 495 near Exit 37 when he struck a 39-year-old from Bradford, Maine.

The Maine man was walking in the travel lane of the highway around 3:20 a.m., according to state troopers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to Lowell General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, State Police said.

An investigation continues, as State Police seek to understand why the pedestrian was walking in the middle of a driving lane on the highway. His vehicle was located in the breakdown lane nearby, police said. The victim's identity is being withheld until his family can be notified.

The driver is not facing charges at this time.
