CHELMSFORD, MA — In the end, the only election that had a contest was the race for Town Meeting member in Precinct 5, where seven people were running for six seats in the June 2 annual Town Election.

The annual town election was postponed from April 7 to June 2, and of 25,557 registered voters 1,830 cast ballots. The estimated population of the town in 2018 according to the census was 35,313.

In the end, Glenn Thoren and Christine Lindberg tied with 105 votes each. One hundred and eighty-four people came out to vote in that election. Town Hall said this represented a "failure to elect." The vacancy is set to be filled by Town Meeting representatives in the precinct on June 22.

Town positions from Selectman to School Committee had no contests. And aside from Precinct 5, Town Meeting members were elected largely with no contest across the nine precincts.

There were not enough people running in precincts 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 prompting write in ballots in those precincts.

The uncontested races comes as a number of other municipalities in Greater Boston have been seeing a slight increase in contested elections, in recent years. Political scientists say when election day comes and there's only one name per seat on a ballot, it's a bad sign for democracy.
