Chelmsford Town Meeting: Bag Ban, Gender Neutral Name, Lights

This year Town Meeting Members will revisit whether to ban plastic bags, change the name of the Board of Selectmen and more.

(Chelmsford Assessors Office)

CHELMSFORD, MA — It's that time of year again: Fall Town Meeting season. The Town Meeting will begin Oct. 21 and Town Meeting members will vote on more than 30 proposals up for discussion. Included in the warrant this meeting is a plan to install $80,000 worth of rapidly flashing lights at crosswalks adjacent to Chelmsford Public Schools and at the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail intersection at High Street.

There's also a proposal to follow in the footsteps of a number of towns across the commonwealth, including Brookline, to change the name of the Board of Selectmen to the gender neutral Select Board in the charter. It would also mean instead of calling members selectmen or selectwomen they'd be referred to as members.

And up for discussion again? Whether Chelmsford should ban thin film single-use plastic bags by all businesses in town. Some 122 communities in the state have adopted a form of a plastic bag ban, including Boston. Last fall the Finance Committee voted 4 to 3 to recommend against approval of a similar article and that Town Meeting ended up voted the article down 71 to 46. But this year could be different.
