The agency learned that Morris and her husband had been hiking when Mary Ellen slipped on an ice-covered rock, sustaining an injury to her ankle. The injury prevented Morris from continuing under her own power. Mary Ellen and Michael also were one mile away from the nearest trailhead.

The couple was able to call 911, and NHFG conservation officers, members of North Conway Fire, Action Ambulance and Lakes Region Search and Rescue responded to the scene, authorities said.

At the scene, Mary Ellen Morris was treated for her injuries and was placed in a rescue basket and carried to the trailhead, NHFG said.

Morris arrived back at the trailhead shortly after 3 p.m., at which point she was transported to the hospital via Action Ambulance, according to NHFG.

The agency reminded hikers about the dangers they face this time of year.

"It is important to note that winter conditions including snow and ice are now present in the mountains," NHFG said in a statement. "Anyone venturing out should expect to encounter winter trail conditions."
