Despite Statewide Loss, Gomez Beats Markey in Chelmsford
Chelmsford's member of Congress had praise for Markey following the announcement that he won.

Despite a race that flew under the radar for many Massachusetts residents, almost one in three Chelmsford voters came out to the polls in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate Special Election.
Although now U.S. Senator-elect Ed Markey won handily over Republican opponent Gabriel Gomez statewide, in Chelmsford Gomez had a healthy, if not landslide victory.
Here, Gomez won 4,381 to 3,344 (32.7% of registered Chelmsford voters) according to unofficial results, winning all nine of Chelmsford’s precincts.
Third party candidate Richard Heos had 22 votes town wide, and there were 15 write-in votes.
In Chelmsford’s neighboring towns, Markey won in Carlisle (919 to 685) and Lowell (5,656 to 4,150), but lost in Westford (2,687 to 2,094) and Tyngsborough (1,382 to 752).
Chelmsford’s member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell), was pleased with the election results, noting her praise for Markey on issues they faced together on the Natural Resources Committee.
“He has one of the most productive and impressive track records in Congress and has played a leading role in advancing issues important to Massachusetts families and businesses,” said Tsongas. “Respect for him runs deep on both sides of the aisle, which will enable him to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact on the major issues facing our nation. “
