Election 2020: How Chelmsford Voted In Trump, Biden Race

CHELMSFORD, MA — As the dust settled from the 2020 general election, unofficial results from the Nov. 3 election in Chelmsford show town voters showed up.

Turnout hit nearly 83 percent in Chelmsford, slightly higher than the 82 percent who turned out in the 2016 presidential election. Of the 26,648 registered voters in town, 22,053 voted in this election, which was only 1,611 more than voted in the 2016 general election.

Chelmsford voted in favor of the right to repair ballot question, following much of the state. Question number 2 on the ballot, regarding ranked choice ballots didn't win in Chelmsford, nor did it get enough votes across the state where 54 percent of voters voted against the move and only 43 percent voted in favor.

If it were up to Chelmsford voters, they would put Vice President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House come Jan. 1. But Chelmsford seemed less enthusiastic of that than elsewhere in Massachusetts. With 87 percent of districts tallied, the state tally puts 66 percent in favor of a Biden, Harris ticket versus 33 percent for a Trump, Pence ticket Wednesday.

Here's how Chelmsford voted:

• Trump and Pence: 7,680 (35 percent)
• Jorgensen and Cohen: 388
• Hawkins and Walker: 105

Representative in Congress for the 3rd District Lori Trahan; Councilor for 3rd District Marilyn Petitto Devaney; Senator in General Court for 3rd Middlesex District Michael J Barrett; Representative in General Court for the 14th Middlesex District Tami Gouveia, Rep in General Court for the 16th Middlesex Tom Golden, Representative in General Court for the 16th Vanna Howard; Representative in General Court for 2nd Middlesex District James Arciero, Register of Probate for Middlesex County Tara DeCristofaro all ran unopposed.

Tuesday's results are considered preliminary and include all ballots counted through the day.
The town is waiting for mail-in ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 and arriving at the town clerk's office by Friday, Nov. 6. Those will be hand counted on Monday, Nov. 9 and added to the unofficial total that night. Overseas ballots can arrive within 10 days of the election, so those will be hand-counted until Friday, Nov. 13 when those, too, will be added to the unofficial total that night by 5 p.m.
