📰 News we're reading

• Alleging retaliation, ex-CFO sues town over ouster (concordbridge.org) — Concord’s former chief financial officer has filed a whistleblower lawsuit in Middlesex Superior Court, claiming town officials retaliated after he raised concerns about financial practices. Town Manager Kerry Lafleur and the town deny wrongdoing, saying the firing was justified, and the case now centers on lost wages, alleged departmental dysfunction, and how Concord manages its finances.

• Financial audit reveals ‘material weaknesses' (concordbridge.org) — Concord’s long-delayed 2024 financial audit flagged “material weaknesses” in town accounting controls, raising worries about transparency and potential impacts on the town’s AAA bond rating. Town officials say staff turnover, software changes, and slow reconciliations contributed, but insist records remain accurate and fixes are underway. Finance leaders now face pressure to speed up the 2025 audit and rebuild public trust.

• Man pleads guilty to killing Concord resident with his car while driving distracted, avoids jail time (boston.com) — A Concord woman who had recently moved to town was killed in a 2024 crash, and the driver has now pleaded guilty and received a suspended jail sentence, lengthy license suspension, and community service. The case, which involved distracted driving and a previously suspended license, has left her family and communities in Concord and Brookline grieving and questioning the leniency of the outcome.
