UPDATE: MBTA Commuter Train Derails Outside Belmont Center

Crane will remove cars to Boston by noon. Accident will not effect afternoon schedules.

An outbound MBTA commuter rail train derailed in Belmont around 8:24 a.m. this morning, when the axle of one of the commuter cars failed.

The Fitchburg-bound train had just left the Belmont station in Belmont Center when the derailment occurred.

About 30 passengers were on the train at the time, however no one was injured. The riders were safely removed from the train.

The derailment is not expected to impact afternoon schedules as plans are for a crane to remove the cars to Boston by noontime.
