2020 U.S. Census Results: The Changing Demographics Of Dedham

The 2020 census shows an America that is becoming more diverse, with the Hispanic population growing faster than any other.

DEDHAM, MA - The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic community.

These changes were reflected in Dedham, where the share of the white population by 6 percent while the Hispanic population jumped by 57 percent.

Dedham also showed an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as multiracial, although the reasons are complex. Experts say the increase reflects changes in the way people identify themselves as well the number of children born to parents of mixed races or ethnicities, along with changes in the wording of census forms themselves.

Other groups saw significant percentage increases, alsthough the number of residents was relatively small. The population that identified themselves as having two racial identities plus non-Hispanic increased almost 170.5 percent to 825 residents. There were 125 people who identified as other non-Hispanic, a gain of 125.68 percent.

Hispanic residents now number 2,125 in Dedham, the biggest percentage in a decade at 57 percent. The Asian population also grew, with 951 residents, a leap of 50.47 percent.

Whites still make up the bulk of Dedham's population at 19,775 of the town's 25,364 residents. This was a 6 percent drop.

The Black non-Hispanic population saw a gain of 18.38 percent to 1,501 residents.
