Dedham Fire Department to Host Open House, Visit Schools to Teach Fire Safety

Fire Chief William F. Spillane and the Dedham Fire Department are pleased to announce that multiple fire safety initiatives will take place during National Fire Safety Month in October, including an open house and visits to every elementary school in Dedham. The open house is scheduled for Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dedham Fire headquarters, 436 Washington St.

The open house, sponsored by Papa Gino's, is aimed at teaching fire safety and prevention practices to families. Firefighters will demonstrate the "stop, drop and roll" method, teach adults to plan escape routes out of their home and how to safely crawl through a smoke-filled room.

Safety tip handouts on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors will be available throughout the open house. In addition, Papa Gino's will provide free pizza and children's fire safety coloring sheets.

As part of National Fire Safety Month, the Dedham Fire Department will also visit every elementary and preschool in town during the month of October to teach safety tips to children.

Firefighters will give a presentation on the equipment and protective gear they use when fighting fires. Children will be given a tour of the fire trucks and fire prevention activity books to take home. The department expects to visit over 1,200 school-age children throughout the month.

"The Dedham Fire Department puts in a large number of outreach hours during the month of October," Chief Spillane said. "We encourage all local families to stop by our Open House and talk to your children about what to do if a fire ever affects your home."
