How Do Norfolk County Commute Times Compare?

New U.S. Census survey looks at the travel time to work for drivers in Norfolk County.

DEDHAM, MA — Commuters in Norfolk County spend much more time on the ride to work than the rest of the state, according to new data released in a U.S. Census survey for 2015.

On average, Norfolk County commuters take about 35 minutes to get to work, about six minutes more than Massachusetts as a whole, and longer even than the Boston area, where the average commute totals about 32 minutes.

That number has also grown substantially since 2014, when the average Norfolk County commute lasted only 32.6 seconds.

The breakdown of how people are getting to work in Norfolk County looks something like this for 2015:

  • Car, truck, van (driving alone): 67.9%
  • Car, truck, or van (carpooling): 8.3%
  • Public transportation (taxicabs excluded): 14.2%
  • Walking: 3.7%
  • Other means: 1.4%
  • Worked at home: 4.5%

  • Car, truck, or van (carpooling): 6.7%
  • Public transportation (taxicabs excluded): 14.1%
  • Walking: 3.6%

The U.S. Census performs the American Community Survey each year, asking questions about housing, employment and other demographic information. The findings are released for states and major metro areas each September, and complete data on every community is released toward the end of the year.
