Police Log: Man Charged with Stealing from Sears, Stop & Shop

The following information was provided by the Dedham Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, they do not indicate conviction.

Monday, Aug. 25

At 10:15 a.m., Dedham police responded to a report of unwanted individuals at the Station 250 complex near Legacy Place. Upon arrival, officers spoke with management and two individuals, a male and a female, who said they had been at the complex and visiting a friend, the mother of whom did not not want the man there and threatened to call the police. After investigating further, police found the man had a warrant out for his arrest out of Boston Municipal Court, and subsequently placed him under arrest.

At 12:57 p.m., police responded to the Marriott Residence inn on a report of malicious damage to one of the rooms at the lodging. Officers spoke with management, who claimed there had been damage in a room and that a woman and two children had been living in that particular room. The damage included black stains on the carpeting, stained linens, crayon markings on the walls and window, juice stain on the carpet near a kitchenette, sticker remains on a table and a stained lamp shade. Officers are investigating the matter.

At 6:33 p.m., police responded to Dick’s Sporting Goods on a report of a woman attempting to make a fraudulent return. Officers spoke with staff at the store, who said the woman appeared to be “under the influence of an unknown substance.” Through surveillance footage, officers observed the woman, later identified as Serena Gregor, along with another unknown female enter the store holding a black North Face fleece jacket. She then was seen going to the clothing department, where she allegedly removed a new North Face jacket from the rack and continued to walk around the store, ditching the jacket she walked in with. She continued to the shoe area of the store and removed a pair of new sneakers, eventually making her way to the checkout line. She then allegedly told the clerk that she wanted to return the jacket, valued at $95, and sneakers, valued at $110, but did not have a receipt. The employee of the store told Gregor he had seen her take the items from the shelves, and subsequently called Dedham police officers, who later arrested Gregor.

At 7:05 p.m., police responded to Sear’s on a report of a female customer trying to make fraudulent returns. Officers spoke with Loss Prevention, who told officers that the female attempted to take multiple articles of clothing valued at about $115. She was subsequently arrested on shoplifting charges.

Tuesday, Aug. 26

At 1:03 p.m., police received a report of a stolen bike from the driveway of a local resident. The bike was not secured at the time, and is described as a red and grey Honda racing pedal bike with a black seat. The bike’s condition was considered to be in “rough shape” and the gears were not working properly.

Wednesday, Aug. 27

At about 4:34 p.m., police responded to Stop & Shop on Providence Highway on a report of a shoplifter in the store. Loss Prevention from Sears, meanwhile, contacted Dedham Police to report they had also had a shoplifter fitting the description of the one that had been in Stop & Shop. Police spoke with the grocery store’s Loss Prevention staff as well as with the alleged shoplifter, identified as Carlos Ramirez-Rodrigue, who was in possession of a black backpack filled with items from different stores throughout the Dedham mall, according to police. He reportedly did not have any receipts for the items. Staff at the store told police they saw Ramirez conceal four DVDs inside a bag, valued at $25.46, and leave the store without paying for the items before being escorted back inside. Sears, meanwhile, reported that several shirts and watches had been stolen, items that totaled about $309.90 in value and were found in Ramirez’s backpack, according to police. He was arrested on charges of larceny of more than $250 and shoplifting.

Friday, Aug. 29

At 2:43 p.m., police responded to Old Navy on a report of a shoplifter in custody. Loss Prevention told police they had a female in custody after she allegedly stole about $200 in merchandise. The woman was summonsed to Dedham District Court for shoplifting and was also trespassed from all Old Navy, Banana Republic and GAP stores, as well as from the Dedham Mall.

At 4:20 p.m., police traveling through the Dedham High School parking lot observed a male teen riding a red/white Giant mountain bike, the description fitting that of a bike reported stolen the previous day. The owner of the reported stolen bike was contacted to identify the bike, which he did so positively as his son’s. The teen riding the bike told police his cousin let him borrow it and he did not know the bike had been stolen. Police then took custody of the bike and turned it over to the owner, and the teen was told to leave the area.

Saturday, Aug. 30

At about 9:50 a.m., police responded to the rear of Highgate Manor on a report that two suspicious individuals were seen possibly smoking out of a pipe. Officers spoke with the individuals, and determined neither had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol and there were no signs of any drug activity.

At 6:30 p.m., police responded to Sears on a report that two shoplifters were in custody. Officers learned that two females had allegedly concealed various items of clothing into their bags and left the store without paying. One of the suspects stole about $421 worth of merchandise, the other allegedly stealing about $457 worth. The two also reportedly carried small wire cutters in their bags to remove store security devices. Both were arrested on shoplifting charges.
