Police Log: Man Suspected of Heroin Use in 7-Eleven Bathroom

The following information was provided by the Dedham Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, they do not indicate conviction.

Monday, Sept. 22

At 3:28 p.m., Dedham police responded to Sears at the Dedham Mall on a report of a shoplifter. Responding officers learned that the male suspect was described as a white male wearing a grey t-shirt and a black baseball hat, later identified as Michael Fisher. The suspect told police he did not take anything from the store, but officer located a Craftsman carpenter’s square in his right back pocket, an item that did belong to the store. Officers also located a U.S. Polo watch belonging to the store in his right front pocket; both items were valued to be about $70 in total. Fisher allegedly used a box cutter to cut the watch out of its packaging before placing it in his pocket, according to police reports. Officer arrested Fisher on shoplifting charges.

At about 9 a.m., officer received a report of potential identity theft. A local woman reported that she received a call from a company on Sept. 9, which informed the woman that she owed Maryland state taxes from 2011. The woman told the caller she never lived in Maryland and provided officers with an Identity Theft Affidavit that she had also filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

At 1:47 p.m., while on patrol, Dedham officers responded to Sears on a report of a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Loss Prevention staff, which claimed that a man named Israel A. DeJesus had been stopped for allegedly stealing several pairs of men’s jeans. Loss Prevention revealed surveillance footage showing the suspect entering the store empty handed before heading over to a rack of men’s jeans, picking up a pair and trying to return them at the register. Employees advised him that the transaction couldn’t be completed, as he did not have a receipt, then provided him with a plastic bag into which to put what they thought were his jeans. He was then seen walking back to the rack of men’s jeans and seen taking a single pair out of the bag, placing several others into it. The jeans came to a total value of about $338. He was arrested on shoplifting charges, and subsequently found to have a pocket knife upon his arrest.

At 3:30 p.m., officers received a report of possible identity theft. A local woman told police she logged onto her bank account and reviewed her bill, when she saw an update regarding her personal information. She then supplied her name, social security number, address and date of birth on the screen, as she thought it was part of her bank. She then became aware that the screen was not part of the bank, when other screens popped up asking for information. She then contacted the bank and made them aware of the situation, and the bank subsequently froze her accounts as a precaution.

At 10:26 p.m., officers responded to 7-Eleven on Bridge Street on a report of two suspicious individuals who may have been using heroin in the bathroom of the store. Police learned that the two suspects had left the store and walked up Needham Street toward the Riverdale School; officers searched the area but were not able to locate anyone. Police then spoke with an employee at 7-Eleven, who said he had been working at the counter when a man and a woman entered the store, then poured themselves a drink at the Slurpee machine. After doing so, they asked if there was an available bathroom in the store, and the employee directed them in the rear of the store. The employee then went to the back office to prevent the two from potentially trying to leave without paying. The female reportedly entered the bathroom first, and then exited and the male then entered. Both individuals subsequently paid for their drinks and left the store. The employee then noticed what he believed to be “track marks” on the man’s arm, and when he entered the bathroom, saw two syringes and a torn baggie on the floor, inside of which he saw what appeared to be heroin. Officers subsequently secured the syringes and baggie in a sharps container.

Wednesday, Sept. 24

At about 2:20 p.m., officers monitoring traffic on Providence Highway viewed a green Jeep Cherokee traveling southbound, the driver of which police recognized as having a default warrant out of Dedham District Court. Police pulled the vehicle over and subsequently arrested Chelsea Mather on the warrant.

Thursday, Sept. 25

At 9 a.m., a local woman entered the Dedham Police Department to report identity theft. The victim told officers that on Sept. 22, she received a call from her broker informing her of fraudulent tax returns filed in her name.

At 12 p.m., police responded to CVS on Eastern Avenue on a report of past shoplifting. Upon arrival, officers spoke with loss prevention and learned that a female had entered the store and attempted to leave with a large number of teeth-whitening strips. Staff approached the woman, who then dropped the items and left the store, entering a gray vehicle and left the area. Officers informed surrounding stores Walgreens and CVS of the incident.

At 1:31 p.m., officers responded to Condon Park on a report of youths fighting. Upon arrival, police spoke with a group of youths in the parking lot, and identified one of the youths to be a seventh-grader at Dedham Middle School. The youth told police she had gotten into a verbal argument at East Dedham Pizzeria with another girl whom she did not know. The argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, during which both females struck each other with closed fists. The fight occurred at different locations between East Dedham Plaza and Condon Park until it was broken up by two uninvolved and unidentified male teenagers. The other girl involved was later identified to be a sixth grader at Dedham Middle School, who reported a similar account to police. Both parties’ parents were advised of the incident.

At 2:15 p.m., officers received a report that two bicycles were stolen from a Dedham residence sometime on Monday, Sept. 22. One of the bikes was described as a grey, 28-inch mountain bike with a value of about $230. The other bike was described as a red, 24-inch mountain bike with a value of about $100.

Friday, Sept. 26

At about 9:17 p.m., officers responded to the East Dedham Fire Station on a report that someone entered the station claiming someone tried to abduct her. The victim told police she had been walking from Veterans Road and had crossed the Saw Mill Lane Bridge when a man came up from behind her and grabbed her elbow and asked, “What are pretty girls like you walking around at night for?” to which she answered, “I can handle myself” as she pulled her arm away, according to police records. The victim then ran to Dunkin Donuts, from where she called home and subsequently walked to the fire station. The man was described as a white male with a height of about 5-feet, 9-inches, having short white hair and white eyebrows, in his 40s or 50s and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, faded jeans and white sneakers.

Saturday, Sept. 27

At 12:59 p.m., police received a report of identity theft. A victim told officers that her credit card had been used without authorization for purchases totaling about $2,000 that were made on Sept. 20. Police advised the woman on steps she could take to protect her identity.
