Suspect Arrested After Police Chase, Crash on Route 128

Dean Conway, 45, is facing multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase Wednesday evening.

Police arrested a Melrose man who was wanted for assault and kidnapping following a police pursuit along I-93 and Route 128, which ended in a crash Wednesday evening.

Dean Conway, 45, of Melrose, was charged with kidnapping, assault, operating under the influence of drugs, and operating with a suspended license after leading police on a chase from I-93 in Dorchester, to Route 128 Needham, the Massachusetts State Police report.

Around 9:30 p.m., Chelsea Police initially attempted to stop Conway because they believed he was traveling with the victim of a domestic assault. Conway evaded police, traveling south along I-93 in Dorchester, reaching speeds of up to 85 miles per hour as he swerved in and out of traffic.

Police say they could see a female passenger frantically signaling for help. Conway was also observed hitting the victim as he sped away from multiple pursuing officers.

The chase was allowed to continue along Route 128 in Dedham and Needham because officers were concerned about the passenger’s safety, police say. Conway then reached speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Police chased Conway to the Highland Avenue exit in Needham, where he ran over multiple construction cones, clipped a tractor-trail and crashed into the median.

Conway tried to flee the scene, but was unable to do so, police say. He was immediately arrested. Conway allegedly told police that he was under the influence off cocaine during the chase and that he had been using the drug for six straight days.

The unidentified female victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.
