D-S Boys Soccer Opens Season With A Win Over Norton

The Raiders won 3-0 over Norton at Frothingham Field Friday night.

Much like their run to winning the state championship last year, the Dover-Sherborn boys soccer team used a lot of skill and a little luck to beat Norton Friday night at Frothingham Field.

In the first half, with D-S leading 1-0, Raider foreward Sam Jordan booted the ball from the top of the box, hitting a Norton defender in the head which then deflected past Norton's keeper into the net to give D-S a 2-0.

The Raiders beat Norton with a final score of 3-0 pressuring the Lancers with their precise offensive attack throughout the game.

“I was real impressed with the way we came out,” said Raiders head Coach Joe Gruseck. “We knew they’d come out hard so I was real impressed with the attitude and the composure.”

Gruseck said that it was his veteran leadership that lead to their first victory of the season.

“Our veteran leadership came through today,” said Gruseck. “The experience we have is really going to pay dividends, or it did today. We’ve got two guys up top with Sam Jordan and Chris Flight, that just, not only are they big and strong but fast.”

Norton head coach Eric Greene was unpleased with his team's performance.

“I don’t think we competed with them at all today. I think they’re on a much higher level than we are. They’re the defending state champions and they played like it and we certainly did not,” said Greene.

The Raiders aggresiveness to the ball was a key in the game allowing them to stay on the offensive for the majority of the game.

“I tell my boys all the time if your going to win games you have to win the 50-50 balls and I think they won every single one. And the team that wins more 50-50 balls is going to win the game so we have to do a better job with that,” Greene said.

Chris Flight had a goal and an assist in the game for D-S while Sean Foreward added the other Raiders goal.

D-S is now 1-0 on the season. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday (9/13) at home against Medfield at 6:45 p.m.
