Sherborn's Leigh Carroll Wins Bronze Medal At World Rowing Championships
In a nail-biting finish, the US team finished just 1.35 seconds behind New Zealand to take the bronze.
On Sunday, July 24 Leigh Carroll of Sherborn was awarded a bronze medal at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Amsterdam.
Leigh was selected by US Rowing as the coxswain for the US Women’s Eight (W8+) boat. Her teammates were Olivia Coffey (N.Y.), Grace Luczak (Michigan), Heidi Robbins(N.H.), Maureen McAuliffe (Virginia), Jenifer Forbes (Maryland), Kelly Pierce (Virginia), Felice Mueller (Ohio) and Erika Roddy (California).
This year, the U23 Championships included teams from 63 countries. In the Women’s Eight, Canada won the gold medal and New Zealand won the silver medal. In a nail-biting finish, the US team finished just 1.35 seconds behind New Zealand to take the bronze.

Carroll, 21, is a rising senior at Brown University, majoring in International Relations. She coxes the varsity boat for the Brown Men’s Crew Team.
The coxswain (or “cox”) steers, coordinates the power and rhythm of the boat, and informs rowers of their race position relative to other teams.

While at Brown, Leigh’s boats have medaled in the Eastern Sprints, the National Collegiate Championships, the San Diego Crew Classic and placed second at England's Royal Henley Regatta.
Leigh began her crew career at Middlesex School, Concord, MA, where her boats were twice New England champion.
