Letter to the Editor: Nestler Will Fight For Our Interests

A letter to the editor in support of Carol Nestler for Selectman

To the Editor:

I understand that the term “Fiscal Responsibility” may not be the sexiest of buzzwords.  Along with “transparency”,  “debt ceiling”, and “accountability”, Americans have nearly perfected the art of tuning out these political platitudes.

Not unlike our kids or grandkids when we tell them to clean their rooms or put the dishes in the sink, if we as adults don’t lead by example and make them follow through, they will tune out our empty words and continue their bad behavior.

With no actionable solutions associated with the clichés, Americans know that the words alone are meaningless.  Unfortunately for our posterity, if we do not take the right steps now to exhibit genuine fiscal discipline, our future generations will be the ones to have to clean up the mess.

As Tip O’Neill once famously said, “All politics is local”. Practically speaking, the security of our family, our community, and our nation starts at home.

When we have a personal financial crisis, we have no choice but to be responsible.  Scrutinize the family budget, plan expenditures carefully,  make difficult decisions, all the while balancing both short and long term goals.

Is this not the same approach that we should demand from our elected officials?

Most of us would agree that this is not the prevailing attitude in Washington, DC.   When lamenting the waste, fraud, and abuse in Congress, citizens can often be heard asking the questions,  “What can I do about it?” or “How can we fix it?”

Again, the answer starts at home.

When acting on OUR behalf, spending OUR money, our elected officials at EVERY level should be asking themselves one honest question: “If I were spending my money, is this the decision I would make?”

In Easton we have an election coming up to nominate two new members to the Board of Selectmen. My vote will be going to the candidate(s) who act with that question in mind.

Carol Nestler epitomizes this mentality. As a member of the Finance Committee for the past 4 years (Last 2 as Chair), she has demonstrated a passion for this town, a love for community service, and most importantly, she has fought for OUR best interests.

Carol brings the right background (A Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Stonehill, a Masters in Finance from Bentley, and years of experience in a variety of business environments) and a tenacious mindset to continue to make Easton a stronger and more stable community.

These are the attributes I want in anyone who is acting on  behalf of myself and my family.

Smart, principled, innovative, hard working…these are all words that can be used to describe Carol Nestler.

But as we all know, words alone don’t get the job done.  Carol is more than words.  She is a woman of conviction and a woman of action .

If you want someone to represent your best interests, someone to act as if she were answering to you personally before she votes to spend your hard earned money, I urge you to vote for Carol Nestler for Board of Selectmen on April 30th.

Best Regards,

Steve Leventhal
