Student Suspended for Bringing Butter Knife to School in Attleboro
A Wamsutta Middle School student paid a big price Thursday for the convenience of using a butter knife to cut her fruit. She was suspended after the school’s vice principal saw her using the utensil because students are not allowed to bring knives on campus.
The suspension has gained media attention, and people are taking sides. State Rep. Paul Heroux said the incident was a missed opportunity for a teachable moment.
“When a school administrator doesn't feel that he or she can exercise discretion and common sense in their job when working with children who don't always appreciate the concern of a butter knife in schools, the consequence may be that children learn to be more afraid of the law than to respect the law," wrote Heroux in a press release.
