📰 News we're reading

1. Fall River man accused of illegally dumping at pond (turnto10.com) — Fall River police say a man will face criminal charges after allegedly dumping patio furniture and a pool liner near Watuppa Pond, a key drinking water source for the city and nearby communities. Investigators used surveillance video to identify the suspect vehicle and are urging residents to report any suspicious activity around the BioReserve and Reservation areas.

2. City Exploring the Purchase of Bishop Connolly Site (frmedia.org) — Fall River officials are negotiating to buy the former Bishop Connolly High School campus on Elsbree Street, aiming to expand classroom space at a fraction of new-construction costs. The school department already leases part of the site for Pre-K and plans to move all Pre-K classes there next fall, freeing up elementary classrooms to reduce class sizes citywide.

3. ‘Rate shock' for Fall River: Healey's affordability push meets a dramatic proposed gas bill hike (newsfromthestates.com) — Gas customers in Fall River could see average bills jump about 55% under a Liberty Utilities rate hike request now before state regulators, potentially raising costs by roughly $80 a month. Local lawmakers, state officials, and Gov. Healey are pushing back, arguing the proposal would hit this already economically stressed city especially hard while spotlighting questions about utility spending and pipeline replacement costs.

4. Group receives $4.9 million in financing from MassHousing to acquire 30-unit St. Mathieu's Apartments in Fall River (fallriverreporter.com) — Affordable housing at St. Mathieu's Apartments on Wellington Street in Fall River is being preserved for nearly three more decades thanks to $4.9 million in MassHousing financing. The 30-unit, Section 8-supported building for seniors and disabled residents will keep long-term affordability protections under a new ownership group, which says it aims to maintain high-quality housing and on-site services.

5. Fall River tragedy: Fire at Gabriel House (wcvb.com) — Ten elderly residents died in a July 13 fire at Gabriel House in Fall River, raising serious questions about recalled sprinklers and oversight at the assisted living facility. Firefighters described chaotic, repeated rescue attempts, while survivors have filed lawsuits against the owner and a fire systems company as investigators probe what went wrong.
