Cape Cod Pony On Road To Recovery After Brutal Attack
Scottie the Welsh pony left his stall and took a walk for the first time after being impaled by a broken pitchfork.
HARWICH, MA — For the first time since being brutally attacked with a broken pitchfork handle, Scottie the Welsh pony left his stall and took a walk, a marking a major strive in his recovery. Earlier this month, someone broke into CB Equestrian Center, a horse farm on Derby Lane in Harwich.
Farm owner Claire Bangert said the attacker broke in overnight, released four horses from the stable and then left Scotty impaled with the pitchfork handle. Bangert said a veterinarian rushed over and saved Scottie's life with a successful surgery.
Scottie's owner Susan Buchanan, of Marstons Mills, told the Cape Cod Times the pitchfork didn't cause any major organ damage. She also said Scottie's IV was removed over the weekend, and he can start rehab next week.

"His appetite is great," Buchanan told the Cape Cod Times. "He was very happy to get out of the stall and be able to roll. He's feeling like a regular old pony."
Bangert created a GoFundMe page to help pay for Scottie's veterinarian bills. The Cape Cod community rallied around Buchanan and her pony raising almost $44,000 in a week, far surpassing the $25,000 campaign goal.

"To those who have and continue to show up, reach out, help, bring meals, install security, give hugs, mend fences, make calls, we are immensely grateful," Bangert wrote on the GoFundMe page. "I will continue to believe that there is more good than evil, more help than hurt and more love than hate in this world. The community steps up and that's what matters most."
Harwich police are still looking for the person responsible for attacking Scottie. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Bob Brackett at 508-430-7541.
