Falmouth At Moderate Risk Of West Nile Virus After 2nd Positive Sample

This is the second week in a row that samples from Falmouth mosquitoes have returned positive for West Nile Virus, officials said.

FALMOUTH, MA — A second mosquito sample collection has returned positive West Nile Virus results in Falmouth, town Health Department officials said.

This comes after a positive sample was collected on July 30 in the southwest part of town in the Sider's Pond area.

A second sample was taken on Aug. 5 and also returned a positive West Nile Virus result, officials said.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has elevated Falmouth's West Nile Virus risk level from low to moderate as a result, officials said.

Prior to these two positive tests, the last positive WNV mosquito sample detected in Falmouth was in 2021.

Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project officials collect routine mosquito samples as part of MDPH’s surveillance program for mosquito-borne diseases.

"The Falmouth Health Department will continue to work closely with the MDPH and the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project (CCMCP) on mosquito control efforts," officials said.

"The location of the positive sample is routinely treated by the CCMCP and will continue to be an area of focus throughout the mosquito season."
