FALMOUTH, MA — Emergency crews are slowly restoring power to Falmouth, but thousands of customers remain in the dark. According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, 4,586 Eversource customers are still without power as of 9:30 a.m. Friday.

At the peak of Wednesday's storm, outages exceeded 7,800. Thousands have had their power restored since, but most may have to wait until the weekend. Eversource said communities on the South Shore and Cape Cod will have power back by 8 p.m. Saturday.

Falmouth was one of the hardest areas hit by the storm in the entire state. Wind gusts reached as high as 79 mph near Woods Hole and 66 mph in East Falmouth. The town also got more rain than any other Barnstable county community. Parts of town got 1.76 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Falmouth police urged residents to cancel their morning commute Thursday while Eversource and the Department of Public Works worked to clear the roadways of trees and power lines. One of those trees made the commute to Woods Hole particularly difficult after it fell near the intersection of Quisset Avenue and Sippewissett Road.

Police reported about a dozen roads were closed Thursday, but road clean up efforts are moving quickly. Lt. Doug DeCosta said there are no longer any roads closed due to weather damage, but the department is checking on a downed tree Quisssett Avenue.

Wednesday's wind gusts pushed an entire dock with boats attached to it on Great Pond to shore. If anyone sees a lost boat, call the registration number into the harbormaster's office, so the owner can be tracked down.

Wind was also an issue in coastal areas like Surf Drive which became impassable after sand from the beach covered the street. Emergency crews needed a bulldozer to clear it.
