Officials Across Cape Cod Share Tips To Stay Warm Ahead Of Frigid Cold

Cape Cod officials have shared tips on how to keep you, your pets and your home safe and warm during potentially dangerous temperatures.

CAPE COD, MA — Officials across Cape Cod are issuing tips and suggestions to residents ahead of potentially dangerous cold temperatures and wind chills in the coming day.

Friday will start off bitterly cold with temperatures in the mid-teens or lower across most of the state. At 10 a.m., rare wind chill warnings will go into effect across the entire state with winds pushing temperatures down to -30 between Worcester and Boston — ditto for the South Shore and Cape Cod.

The worst of the arctic air will hit areas like Fitchburg and North Adams with wind chills at -40 possible, according to the National Weather Service.

High wind gusts could reach 50 mph in Provincetown and Gloucester. Gusts will only be slightly weaker from Boston to all points west at between 35 and 45 mph, according to forecasts.

"In addition to the dangerously cold wind chills, strong winds will accompany the arctic air mass. Northwest wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are expected Friday into Friday night. Any power outages would be a concern given the dangerous cold," the National Weather Service said.

Officials from Falmouth to the Upper Cape have offered suggestions on how to keep yourself, your pets and your home safe and warm ahead of a weekend likely best spent indoors.

"With the rapidly increasing temperatures on Sunday, conditions are perfect for pipes to burst. Make sure anywhere you have plumbing is warm enough to withstand the cold and freezing temperatures. Outdoor showers should be shut down and drained," said the Dennis Police Department.

In Yarmouth, officials have provided an extensive list of tips for those with pets.

The Bourne Fire Department has issued a list of things to check before the cold weather hits around the house:

  • Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and test them regularly
  • Keep safe distances of at least three feet from fireplaces and solid fuel stoves, and have your chimney professionally cleaned yearly
  • Do not use space heaters as your #1 heating source, and maintain at least three feet of clearance
  • Do not use a gas oven or stove for heating
  • If you smell gas or something like rotten eggs, move outside and call 9-1-1
