📰 News we're reading

1. Steamship Authority wasted $4M on website project, inspector says (capecodtimes.com) — Falmouth residents who rely on the Steamship Authority are learning that a state inspector general found more than $4 million was wasted on a failed website project, blaming poor planning and oversight. The report urges governance reforms and tighter project management as a new general manager takes over, while a citizens’ group with Falmouth members says the findings validate long-standing concerns about mismanagement.

2. Eversource Nears Finish Line for Undersea Cable Project (vineyardgazette.com) — New undersea power cables between Martha’s Vineyard and Falmouth are nearly complete, strengthening a key piece of regional infrastructure that runs through town. Eversource is replacing an aging line and adding a fifth cable, aiming to prevent blackouts and eventually eliminate diesel generators, with costs spread across eastern Massachusetts ratepayers once regulators review the project.

3. Vineyard Steamship Board Member Will Not Run for Third Term (vineyardgazette.com) — Falmouth’s representation on the Steamship Authority board will sit alongside a new Vineyard member next year, as longtime Vineyard representative James Malkin withdraws from seeking a third term. His departure follows a critical state inspector general report on the Authority’s management and comes as a new general manager and reservation system are being put in place, changes that will shape ferry service for Falmouth riders.

4. Maciel leads Upper Cape to lopsided win over South Shore Tech (capecodtimes.com) — Falmouth High’s Clippers girls basketball team dropped their first game of the season, 37–28 to Old Rochester, despite strong performances from several players on both ends of the floor. The roundup also highlights other Cape and Islands high school teams, but Falmouth’s detailed stats and effort stand out for local fans tracking early-season form.

5. Early results from the Christmas bird counts (capeandislands.org) — Rare birds turned up close to home this year, with a Black-throated Gray Warbler in a West Falmouth stream thicket and several unusual species at Falmouth’s Crane Wildlife Management Area during the early Christmas Bird Counts. The column walks readers through standout sightings across Cape Cod, from snow-dusted Tree Swallows to a memorable Snowy Owl encounter for young birders.
