Tommy Leonard, Falmouth Road Race Founder, Dies
The ex-Marine started the road race in the early 1970s as a fundraiser for the Falmouth High School girls' track team.

FALMOUTH, MA – The man who founded the Falmouth Road Race has passed away, according to race officials. Tommy Leonard was 85.
Leonard, an ex-Marine, started the 7-mile race in the early 1970s to fundraise for the Falmouth High School girls' track team. It had 92 runners when it began in 1973; today, more than 12,000 people participate in the race annually.
Leonard died Wednesday night at JML Care Center in Falmouth.
