Canestaro Restaurant to Close, Apartment Building to Go in Its Place

A new five story, 20-unit residential building built on Peterborough St. in the place where Canaestaro restaurant currently stands.

Change is coming to Peterborough street, and it's two-fold.

First, Canestaro, an Italian-American pizza and pasta restaurant, will close at 16 Peterborough St., then a developer will demolish the existing buildings at 16-20 Peterborough St. In its place, the developer will construct a five-story, 20-unit residential building and 12 parking spaces in the back.

The 27,000 square foot building will feature four two-bedroom units on all five floors for a total of 20 as well as an office/accessory use on the first floor. Three of the units will be affordable. The owner and developer of the site is Yannis Leminopoulos of Needham, and the architect on the project is Lucio Trabucco of Nunes Trabucco Architects.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority said that during a community meeting, residents in the area reportedly wanted to see a restaurant remain on the site, but the current owner is uninterested in remaining and the developer had trouble filling the space with another tenant, officials said.

"The proposed project will result in revitalizing the appeal and vibrancy of the Peterborough Street streetscape," the developer wrote in the proposal submitted to the city. "In particular, the project will remove a non-descriptive, underused brick structure ... to an aesthetically pleasing residential facility complementing the immediate neighborhood."
