FBI, Gardner Museum Announcement Coming Monday

After years on the hunt, officials may have news about the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum heist. The Boston office of the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's office and Gardner Museum will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Monday to discuss the case and release a new website about the theft and investigation.

The museum was robbed March 18, 1990, when thieves dressed as police officers were let into the closed museum. The robbers made off with priceless works by Dutch Masters Rembrandt, Vermeer and Govaert Flinck, along with a Chinese vase, five works by Edgar Degas and a Manet.

In recent months, however, the security guard, once thought a hapless victim, has come under closer scrutiny, according to The Boston Globe. Richard Abath was found bound by duct tape and handcuffs in the aftermath of the robbery. Abath maintained his innocence to the Globe and in a manuscript he's written.

After years of little news, the heist made front pages again last year. An alleged Connecticut mobster officials believe was involved in the caper had his home searched by federal officers in March 2012. Investigators used ground-penetrating radar to search under Robert Gentile's backyard to try and find weapons and presumably the artwork. Nothing turned up.

The museum has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the return of the lost artwork.
