New Candidate in Race for Fenway City Council District

Greg Timilty of Beacon Hill announced his candidacy for District 8 City Council.

A new candidate has stepped into the city council race for the district that includes the Fenway neighborhood.

Greg Timilty of Beacon Hill announced last week he had officially launched his campaign for the District 8 City Council seat, which includes the West End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Fenway, Mission Hill and Brigham Circle neighborhoods.

Timilty said he's running for city council because as a parent and small business owner and sees a lot more work to be done in the city.

"As a city councilor I will fight for more funding for after-school programs and more focus on math and technology," he said. "As a small business owner I also recognize that District 8 is one of the economic engines that drives this city, from its many colleges and universities to the many small businesses, and some of the best restaurants this city and state have to offer."

Timilty said Boston must continue to improve its schools to strengthen its neighborhoods and build upon the "solid economic foundation" that Mayor Menino created.

"Boston’s bond rating is the envy of citiesall over the country and enables us to borrow money at very low rates," he said. "This will enable us to make badly needed infrastructure improvements and invest in our future by investing in our public education system."

Timilty will take on Joshua Zakim, son of the late civil rights activist Leonard P. Zakim, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Lenny Zakim Fund. Zakim announced his candidacy in mid-April.

City Councilor Mike Ross has held the seat since 1999. Ross announced his bid for mayor earlier this year.
